Susan Boyle - Audition Review

Introduction:

We were talking about stereotypes / preconceptions / generalizations regarding appearance in the English lesson. I have been extremely interested in psychology for the last 2 months. For this reason, I decided to write an essay about the stunningly fascinating performance of Susan Boyle and in general about judging people by their appearance.

Her performance and the reactions:

Susan Boyle performed in the first episode of Britan's Got Talent 2009. I'm a huge fan of talent shows in general, and I first saw Susan's act when I was 14 years old. She's was stigmatized owing to her appearance. From the moment she walked on the stage, everybody was laughing, and everyone was against her. No one in the audience had expected, that she will blow the roof of the theatre. She sang "I dreamed a dream" which is a hard song to sing, but she had managed to succeed. Piers Morgan said it was the biggest surprise which he had ever witnessed. Amanda Holden said it's a major problem that people are cynical towards people like Susan. She added that it was a complete privilege to listen her singing. Simon told her that he knew from the moment she stepped in that it will be something extraordinary. Personally, I couldn't believe him, since he stereotyped her from the beginning.

My opinion:

I must confess that she performed with exuberance, which means she was full of energy and enthusiasm. Her stage presence was incredibly good. Her performance was really impressive, with such amazing talent. She is meant to be a professional singer because she is able to get attention from the audience. There was a standing ovation, which she absolutely deserved. She had the whole world talking about her. I'm convinced / persuaded about the fact it was the biggest wake-up call for all the people, to not make assumptions of anybody, and to be open-minded. We shouldn't be afraid of experiencing new things.

The psychological approach:

I think that Susan Boyle may have suffered from a lack of self-confidence. Everyone presumed that she's was a 47-year-old woman who lived alone with her cat, which was true. She may have had an Inferiority Complex, which means that she was inferior to the people around her, and her environment was superior. I think she had a bad self-image concerning her appearance. She probably had self-esteem problems, as well. I'm deadly sure that her confidence had increased since then, and her body-image had got better. I firmly believe that women ought not to compare themselves with others because each woman are beautiful in their own way. Sometimes males forget to have a look at the inner qualities of a woman, which is an enormously big mistake.

Summary:

I honestly agree with the idiom / general truth "We shouldn't judge a book by its cover". We had better not underestimate and stigmatize people based on their appearances, as it's utterly unfair.
