Living on the Margins - Addicted to Drugs

Introduction:

Despite the fact that eating poppy seed in some countries doesn't appear to be a criminal offence, drug abuse is an outrageously serious societal problem that has to be dealt with.

In general:

It's presumed that the vast majority of people become drug addicts due to the lack of willpower that makes it almost impossible to give up substance abuse. Drug addiction is a complex disease. Provided that you take drugs into your body, the substance will modify your brain in a very unfavourable way that makes the addict want more drugs to avoid the excruciating withdrawal symptoms that may occur.

Consequences:

Taking drugs can be a cause of lots of things, including domestic violence or the loss of employment. Drug usage is not recommended among under-aged minors, either. There is a higher percentage that children with substance abuse will fail or be expelled from school owing to their violent and disruptive behaviour. Researchers carried out a survey indicating that drug usage highly contributes to and enhances the loss of productivity, not to mention wrecked lives.

Prevention:

As drug usage can be prevented, I firmly believe that the focus ought to be on prevention. One of the most efficient ways how substance abuse could be prevented is that medical professionals, teachers and parents should cooperate and work together so that they could raise awareness and inform the general public of the risks and consequences of drug addiction. The media could also have a very favourable effect on the reduction of such abuses like these on the young generation in particular.

Fortunately, there are lots of health care facilities providing treatments for drug addicts, which can be tailored for their individual needs, to help and overcome compulsive drug addiction. These treatments usually include medication and behavioural therapy.

View of the people:

There is an argument going on whether soft drugs ought to be legalised or not. Some people support the idea of decriminalising such substances like LSD or marijuana that don't lead to physical addiction. These people believe that taking such measures like these would highly contribute to the willingness of these addicted people to undergo treatments.

Many people claim that drug barons and drug traffickers should be prosecuted and prison sentences ought to be imposed on them for committing such inexcusable criminal offences like this. There are also a tremendous number of people supporting the idea that drug laws ought to be toughened.

Conclusion:

What is common in these ideas is that something should be done to tackle this societal problem.
