Otherness - People with Disabilities

Introduction:

Provided that you have already been abroad, what you may have experienced is that otherness is more visible outside of Hungary. That is why you are unlikely to see wheelchairs and guide dogs for those people who had lost their sight within the country. The main question is then whether the current number of handicapped people has decreased or not. I firmly believe that the answer is "no" for this question.

Disadvantaged people:

Researchers carried out a survey indicating that there is an estimated ratio that 10% of people have some kind of disability or impairment. Since their job prospects are less favourable owing to the lack of financial resources, they are more likely to be hit by poverty. According to an academic journal, handicapped people may find difficulties in finding the workplace of their dreams, that meets their needs. Despite the fact that both the UNO and the EU have introduced laws that forbid and prohibit discrimination in the field of disability, they are still exposed to social exclusion.

In theory, all societies ought to be responsible for making sure that these people don't suffer unnecessary hardships and they can live their life to the fullest. One of the many ways how we can provide support is granting disability allowance that could cover the costs of their special needs, including mobility and special care. Another way how we can support them for instance, wheelchair-bound people is to make public transport accessible and other public places, so as to cater for their individual needs. Providing these measures were taken into consideration, it would highly enhance and facilitate the participation of handicapped people in society.

I absolutely support the idea of developing such computer software that would be able to read texts aloud, from which blind or partially sighted people could favourably benefit. Another amazing idea, which I'm a really big fan of, is to make television and other media content accessible for deaf people by adding sign language interpreters to TV programmes so that deaf people would easily understand the message without any difficulty.

For instance, by watching the Paralympic Games, children will not probably think of wheelchaired people as something odd and they will be more likely able to accept otherness, as well as mental disabilities. Reaching wider audiences may help people overcome prejudices that they might think about being other compared to their environment whom they are surrounded by.

Segregation:

A hotly debated question is that whether children with physical, sensory, or even mental disabilities ought to be institutionalized or be told to attend mainstream schools where they receive personalized special care. Some people tend to declare that handicapped people don't belong in ordinary schools inasmuch as they need more attention and it puts an extra burden on the teachers, that I have to agree with because it is utterly true. Whilst other social workers are persuaded about the fact that children with impairments should be allowed to enter regular schools seeing that it strongly facilitates their integration into the so-called normal society.

It is probably the best solution to decide whether underaged adolescent minors ought to be integrated is to opt for the suitable institution case by case. It strongly depends on what kind of disability your children have and the severity of his / her condition.

Conclusion:

Raising awareness and educating people about impairments is a key factor in creating a more liveable environment for handicapped people. Mankind should not stereotype, for instance, deaf people or those people who are hard of hearing since it's not the natural order of things.
