Women's Rights: Is It a Question of Attitude?

Introduction:

What do we mean by minorities?

It's self-evident that the notion of a homogenous society is a fiction. There is no such nation whose citizens have the same qualities and attributes in terms of sex, race, religion, social background etc. The term minority is used to depict a smaller part of a whole when talking about ethnicities. Here are two examples of races facing discriminatory actions with historic backgrounds that later lead to affirmative action and quotas:

  • Blacks (racial segregation - Martin Luther King)
  • Africans (the abolition of slavery - Abraham Lincoln)

Women's rights:

Nevertheless, this term can either be used to talk about the most populous marginalized society in the world, representing half of the population: women. Through history females were, and in some countries, they are oppressed and disadvantaged regarding their entitlements, rights, and opportunities. There are countless nations where females don't enjoy equal rights with their male counterparts and are seen as inferior and fragile. Not to mention the gender pay gap and the low number of women employed in executive positions and CEOs.

Another major problem is misogyny against our feminine counterparts and hatred for women. Even though the situation has changed considerably throughout the world, it appears to me that the glass ceiling has not been removed yet.

Emma Watson's pioneering speech at a UNO Congress:

My point of view:

Personally, I'm absolutely in favour of making a heterogeneous society where everyone has the same opportunity to live their life to the fullest and doesn't have to suffer prejudicial discrimination solely based on gender. It's my conviction that everybody is entitled to attend the same quality of education and nurturance regardless of their sexes. It's a fallacy to say that one sex is better than the other and deprive one of their rights. What I believe is that gender bias and preconceptions are part of the 21st century owing to the growing influence of patriarchal values. I honestly think that the emphasis should be on dismantling these stereotypes. I'm persuaded that objectification, sexual assaults and rape against women are disgraceful and a sin.

Kamala Harris' ground-breaking appearance in the mainstream media:

Conclusion:

Taking into consideration the increasingly high figures of unfair treatment of women, it ought to be the duty of the generation of the 21st century to condemn gender discrimination and sexism. Now, I have only one question - where is the light at the end of the tunnel?
